NOW what??

Last week we spied a tiny field mouse in our basement, not wanting to share our house with ANY furry creatures, Tadd set a trap and within a few days had we caught the mouse. Fast forward two days and Harrison comes running upstairs with a playdate friend in tow. MOM! There is another mouse in the basement, just sitting in the middle of the floor. DON'T TOUCH IT!! I shouted and ran downstairs to investigate, thinking whatever mouse was there would certainly have scampered away. Much to my horror, a tiny mouse was wobbling around the floor, searching for a warm mama mouse, and it's sibling wasn't far behind, crying for her too. I know what you're thinking, It's a mouse! Get over it! Mice carry diseases and all sorts of horrible things! But all I could think about was these two tiny mice, crying for their mother and starving for food. Maybe because I have a dependent baby on my hip all day, but I really feel sad for these baby mice. They will surely die, their eyes aren't even open yet! What should I do with them? What is the most humane way to approach this? I'm torn!! Any suggestions?

See how tiny they are? This is a quarter!!

(UPDATE, last night Tadd took the kids and the baby mice on a walk to a nearby corn field and let them go so they could "find their mama, and eat some corn". I'm convinced they will find a surrogate mama mouse that will take them in and they will be happy field mice, never making their way to a human home again.)

See I would just keep them, that is why I live in a zoo. I'm sure you have a wildlife rescue in your area. They can tell you how to care for them until they can be released. You may also want to get a cat to live in your basement to keep them away. They are very cute!

Good luck with that.

Remember when you were 13 and wanted a pet??? We had a dog, Paul was allergic to cats, I put my foot down on snakes and gerbils. So we settled on white mice. They gave me the creeps--the only kind of mice I had seen were dead in a trap.
I can't remember what became of the white mice--I think they escaped their cage and found their way to a trap! Good luck.

Um, I am sure that there is a pet store that will take them...but they will probably end up as snake food. At least you would feel like you were giving them a chance to run with their uncontrollable sphincters leaking urine all over some unsuspecting persons utensils or dishes or worse, the top of pop cans! OH yeah...I don't have much sympathy. Well, I do because they are babies, but I DO know they will grow...AND MULTIPLY! Good luck!

I would say the kindest thing to do is to put them out. We found a cute barely out of the egg quail in our yard that was just precious. But we knew we couldn't take care of it and if we left it on its own a dog would eat it, so Scott kindly disposed of the poor baby.

sorry sis, fresh out of advice on this one...I am glad they found refuge in a corn field though. As much as I despise animals and rodents of all kinds, those things are kinda cute. I ghuess.

Oh Amber, for some reason your little mice story reminded me of your other pets you had growing up...like the tranchula you found in your bathroom???? Scary!!!
